Perched on a hill overlooking the Rhône, the Abbey of Saint-Roman is an exceptional site not to be missed during a visit to Provence. This unique troglodytic monastery transports you through the centuries in a setting that is both mystical and impressive.

Wild and captivating

A monastery carved into the stone

Carved by the natural flow of water present millions of years ago, the summit of Saint-Roman, located in the Massif de l'Aiguille, offers peace and seclusion to the community of monks who settled there. The monks enlarged and re-excavated the existing natural cavities to create this abbey, unique in Europe, first mentioned in writing in the 10th century. This place of prayer and meditation has flourished over time, offering visitors today a rare testimony to medieval monastic life. Take the time to discover it and be inspired by the serenity of the place.

The tour will allow you to discover the large room dug from top to bottom, the chapel and the abbot's seat, the monks' cells and on the upper terrace of the site: an open-air necropolis. This has no fewer than a hundred tombs.

Visitors love this unusual abbey for its exceptional setting, unique history and peaceful atmosphere, with the added bonus of a spectacular view that makes it a must-see in Beaucaire!

After your visit, extend your discovery with a walk in the Massif de l'Aiguille and its highest point, the Pic de l'Aiguille. The latter offers a magnificent view of the abbey!

The Abbey of Saint Roman is a hidden gem in the scrubland, located a few kilometers from Beaucaire, in the Gard department. Although nestled in the Aiguille massif, it can be reached by following the road signs.
The Abbey car park is accessible via Chemin de la Tapie, following Route de Nîmes (it is signposted at the roundabout when arriving or leaving Beaucaire).
You will also have the possibility to park your bike.

A marked trail starts at the end of the parking lot and takes about 15 minutes to walk along a gently sloping path with steps. This trail crosses pine forests and scrubland, providing a pleasant setting, often shaded in summer.

The trail is accessible to all but not suitable for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs. It is recommended to wear closed shoes and bring a water bottle, especially in summer. During the Mistral wind, the wind can blow strongly at the summit of the abbey.

Dogs are accepted but must be kept on a leash.

Car parking, bicycle racks, and picnic tables are available. Please note there are no water points or toilets on site.

Fun Fact… Beaucaire beach?! 🌊

The sea was present in Beaucaire 25 million years ago! Hence the presence of shell limestone at the Abbey of Saint-Roman.
