The history of Vallabrègues, the basket-making village
Let's go back a few steps. At the very beginning of the 20th century and at the end of the previous century, Vallabrègues was truly considered the capital of basketry. Nearly 450 basket makers lived and worked in the village. It was quite natural that the basket makers settled there to work with the willow that grew along the river. Located on the banks of the Rhône, the basket makers would go to harvest the willow in the "baïsses," the fertile, marshy lands bordering the river. The return of the willow harvesters was celebrated throughout the village and gave rise to large, lively festivals.
The Basketry Museum
Today, you can also visit the museum that traces the history of basketry in this village. The Municipal Basketry Museum invites you to explore an ancestral craft through more than 1,500 exhibited pieces : baskets, hods, everyday objects, and creations specifically designed for harvesting fruits and flowers in Provence.
