A rich and fascinating history

Built in the 11th century as the residence of the Counts of Toulouse, the Beaucaire fortress, where Raymond VII was born, played a major strategic role during the conflicts between the French crown and the lords of the South. After the Albigensian Crusade, it was annexed to the Kingdom of France and reinforced to become an important military stronghold. Today, the remains of this fortification are impressive!

Climbing the fortress's ramparts offers exceptional views of the Rhône River, the rooftops of Beaucaire, and the neighboring town of Tarascon. It's the perfect spot to take photos and soak up the unique atmosphere of this historic castle.

At the time, the fortress was not the only star of Beaucaire… From the Middle Ages until the 18th century, Beaucaire hosted an international trade fair, one of the most important in Europe, which attracted merchants from all over the Mediterranean: the famous Foire de la Madeleine!

Fun fact: bullfights in the fortress

In the 19th century, the Beaucaire fortress was not only a historical site, but also a venue for unusual spectacles! Bullfights were held there, transforming the former stronghold into a veritable temporary arena...

Prosper Mérimée, passing through Beaucaire in 1834, was scandalized by this news and had the chapel that served as a toril listed! This is how the Chapel became the first Beaucaire monument to be listed as a Historic Monument in 1846.

Place Raimond VII 30300 Beaucaire

Find me an itinerary

The easiest way is to park in the large Pré car park, next to the Casino and along the Rhône. Then head to Place Raimond VII.
At the square, you will see the gates of the fortress and the stairs leading to it. This entrance is easily accessible for young and old, but the access is quite steep (path and stairs) and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
For people with reduced mobility and those with strollers: another access is possible: it is via the castle climb (access via Rue de la République). On this side, there are no steps, but the slope remains quite steep.

Access to the fortress is free. You can visit the rampart walk, the remains of the medieval castle, and the beautiful landscaped gardens. Access to the keep is closed for self-guided tours. The keep can be visited during guided tours of the fortress accompanied by a heritage guide.
