Mas des Tourelles

Museum Overview

A unique experimental archaeology experience awaits you at Mas des Tourelles: the reconstruction of a working Gallo-Roman cellar, where wines are vinified according to ancient methods.

This approach is inspired by the archaeological remains discovered on the property.

Owned by the Durand family since 1762, Mas des Tourelles is a renowned wine estate, located in Beaucaire, in the heart of the Roman triangle of Nîmes, Pont du Gard and Arles, and at the gateway to the Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road going from Italy to Spain.

Two thousand years ago, the Romans established a Gallo-Roman "Villa" on the very site of Les Tourelles, dedicated to wine production. For the past thirty years, the estate has collaborated with archaeologists to explore the flavors of Roman wines through the full-scale reconstruction of a working Gallo-Roman cellar, where grapes are vinified according to the methods of the period.

During your visit, you can enjoy:
– From a walk through a Roman garden and vineyard leading to the archaeological site.
– Exhibitions on the culture of vines and wine in the Gallo-Roman period.
– The discovery of a Roman perfumery with the screening of a film on ancient perfumes.
– A Roman games room for children… and adults.
– A visit to the reconstructed Gallo-Roman cellar, accompanied by an explanatory film on how it works.
– An unusual tasting of wines made in the Gallo-Roman cellar and according to recipes from Latin authors: Mulsum, Turriculae and Carenum.
