Vallabrègues, the most Provençal of the Gard villages in the 21st century!

Vallabrègues is the only village in the Gard located on the left bank of the Rhône, and the whims of the Rhône have indeed altered its geography. During a violent flood, the Rhône changed its course... to end up on the other side of the village! It was only natural that basket makers settled here to work the wicker growing along the river.

Vallabrègues is a village of basket weavers. For many years, the village has hosted the European Basket Weaving Festival during a weekend in August. This is hardly surprising, as Vallabrègues has been famous for this very reason since the 19th century, and today, the village's very last basket weaver can still be found in one of the hidden alleys of the old town center.

Let's take a step back in time. At the very beginning of the 450th century and at the end of the previous century, Vallabrègues was truly considered the capital of basketry. Nearly XNUMX basket makers lived and practiced their trade in the village. Located on the banks of the Rhône, the basket makers would go out to harvest wicker in the baïsses, the fertile, marshy lands along the river. The return of the baïsses was celebrated throughout the village and gave rise to large, lively festivals.

Today you can visit the museum which traces the history of basketwork in this village.
